The Sweetness of Bitter

For the first time, I tasted something sweet from the bitterness of life.

When I was younger, I always asked mama why can’t all of life be sweet, like a box of chocolates. Sure, you never know what you’re going to get, but whatever you get, it’s always going to be sweet.

Mama said that’s called daydreaming, that life came in a package, with the good and the bad. The ups and the downs.

But hey, that day when I was sitting on the plane, I suddenly got it. The beauty of pain and sadness. There’s going to be a day when you look back at the pain and somehow it’s all worth it. You regret the mistakes you make, sure, but that happens. It’s the pain you appreciate. The bitter, the unexpected things that numb you. It takes time though. A long time. It takes distance and acceptance, and it only happens a long time after you’ve been in the mud. Kiddo, you might not believe it now, but one day you’ll come to see it for yourself. The beauty of life, in all its entirety. The downs, the pains, and the aches that you thought would destroy you in the moment.
